Reclaiming The Gospel

See into one man's theology turned rightside up by the love of Christ. A pastor, born again in the pulpit, encounters the world and the church in the light of the gospel — and everything changed. Phillip A. Ross of Pilgrim Platform Books

Crisis of ...

What? The American economy? The Stock Market? Eight years of Bush policies? How about a hundred years of liberal indoctrination!

If we can't see the right problem or see the problem rightly, we cannot find the right solution. If we don't understand the disease, we cannot prescribe a medication. Apart from a proper diagnosis, doing something may be worse than doing nothing. America is in serious denial of her real situation. Seeing the problem, putting the problem in the correct context, is everything.

What Can We Do?

The first thing to do is to see the problem in its proper context, its historical context, its cultural context. That is what these books are about, helping people see the problem from a biblical perspective. However, unrepentant sinners do not want to see what the Bible is trying to show us because the perspective of the Bible threatens them — and rightly so. For the past hundred years or so unrepentant sinners have had increasing control of American public education, media and even religious institutions. People have been steeped in godlessness for so long that they no longer even realize it. These books provide insight and instruction intended to repair the breaches.

Man's Book Of Rules

In the church, man's book of rules fall short of the doctrine of the apostles. For they proved their ministry, for the Lord was with them.

No Condemnation

Who do people say you are? This is who the word of God says a born again Christian is. Are you born again? If so, tell the world.

Romans 8:1–2 I am free from condemnation.
Romans 8:28 I am assured that God works for my good in all circumstances.
Romans 8:31–39 I am free from any condemnation brought against me and I cannot be separated from the love of God.
2 Corinthians 1:21–22 I have been established, anointed and sealed by God.
Colossians 3:1–4 I am hidden with Christ in God.
Philippians 1:6 I am confident that God will complete the good work He started in me.
Philippians 3:20 I am a citizen of heaven.
2 Timothy 1:7 I have not been given a spirit of fear but of power, love and a sound mind.
1 John 5:18 I am born of God and the evil one cannot touch me.

About Apostles

Apostle: A person sent by another; a messenger; envoy.

This word is once used as a descriptive designation of Jesus Christ, the Sent of the Father (Hbr 3:1; Jhn 20:21). It is, however, generally used as designating the body of disciples to whom he intrusted the organization of his church and the dissemination of his gospel, "the twelve," as they are called (Mat 10:1-5; Mar 3:14; 6:7; Luk 6:13; 9:1). We have four lists of the apostles, one by each of the synoptic evangelists (Mat 10:2-4; Mar 3:16; Luk 6:14), and one in the Acts (Act 1:13). No two of these lists, however, perfectly coincide.

Our Lord gave them the "keys of the kingdom," and by the gift of his Spirit fitted them to be the founders and governors of his church (Jhn 14:16,17,26; 15:26,27; 16:7-15). To them, as representing his church, he gave the commission to "preach the gospel to every creature" (Mat 28:18-20). After his ascension he communicated to them, according to his promise, supernatural gifts to qualify them for the discharge of their duties (Act 2:4; 1Cr 2:16; 2:7,10,13; 2Cr 5:20; 1Cr 11:2). Judas Iscariot, one of "the twelve," fell by transgression, and Matthias was substituted in his place (Act 1:21). Saul of Tarsus was afterwards added to their number (Act 9:3-20; 20:4; 26:15-18; 1Ti 1:12; 2:7; 2Ti 1:11).

Luke has given some account of Peter, John, and the two Jameses (Act 12:2,17; 15:13; 21:18), but beyond this we know nothing from authentic history of the rest of the original twelve. After the martyrdom of James the Greater (Act 12:2), James the Less usually resided at Jerusalem, while Paul, "the apostle of the uncircumcision," usually travelled as a missionary among the Gentiles (Gal 2:8). It was characteristic of the apostles and necessary

(1) that they should have seen the Lord, and been able to testify of him and of his resurrection from personal knowledge (Jhn 15:27; Act 1:21,22; 1Cr 9:1; Act 22:14,15).

(2.) They must have been immediately called to that office by Christ (Luk 6:13; Gal 1:1).

(3.) It was essential that they should be infallibly inspired, and thus secured against all error and mistake in their public teaching, whether by word or by writing (Jhn 14:26; 16:13; 1Th 2:13).

(4.) Another qualification was the power of working miracles (Mar 16:20; Act 2:43; 1Cr 12:8-11). The apostles therefore could have had no successors. They are the only authoritative teachers of the Christian doctrines. The office of an apostle ceased with its first holders.
In 2Cr 8:23 and Phl 2:25 the word "messenger" is the rendering of the same Greek word, elsewhere rendered "apostle."

Act 2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
Act 2:5And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven.
Act 2:6 Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.

Act 2:8And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born?
Act 2:9Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judaea, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia,
Act 2:10Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes,
Act 2:11Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God.
Act 2:12And they were all amazed, and were in doubt, saying one to another, What meaneth this?
Act 2:13Others mocking said, These men are full of new wine.
Act 2:14¶But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them, Ye men of Judaea, and all [ye] that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and hearken to my words:
Act 2:15For these are not drunken, as ye suppose, seeing it is [but] the third hour of the day.
Act 2:16But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel;
Act 2:17And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams:
Act 2:18And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy:
Act 2:19And I will shew wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke:

Act 2:21And it shall come to pass, [that] whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.
Act 2:22¶Ye men of Israel, hear these words; Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know:
Act 2:23Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain:
Act 2:24Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it.
Act 2:25For David speaketh concerning him, I foresaw the Lord always before my face, for he is on my right hand, that I should not be moved:
Act 2:26Therefore did my heart rejoice, and my tongue was glad; moreover also my flesh shall rest in hope:
Act 2:27Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.
Act 2:28Thou hast made known to me the ways of life; thou shalt make me full of joy with thy countenance.
Act 2:29Men [and] brethren, let me freely speak unto you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his sepulchre is with us unto this day.
Act 2:30Therefore being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne;
Act 2:31He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption.
Act 2:32This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses.
Act 2:33Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear.
Act 2:34For David is not ascended into the heavens: but he saith himself, The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand,
Act 2:35Until I make thy foes thy footstool.
Act 2:36Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ.
Act 2:37Now when they heard [this], they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men [and] brethren, what shall we do?
Act 2:38Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
Act 2:39For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, [even] as many as the Lord our God shall call.
Act 2:40¶And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this untoward generation.
Act 2:41Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added [unto them] about three thousand souls.
Act 2:42And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.
Act 2:43And fear came upon every soul: and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles.
Act 2:44And all that believed were together, and had all things common;
Act 2:45And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all [men], as every man had need.
Act 2:46And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart,
Act 2:47Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.
