With A Great Sound Of A Trumpet

Mat 24:25 Behold, I have told you before.

Mat 24:26 Wherefore if they shall say unto you, Behold, he is in the desert; go not forth: behold, he is in the secret chambers; believe [it] not.

Mat 24:27 For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

Mat 24:28 For wheresoever the carcase is, there will the eagles be gathered together.

Mat 24:29 Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken:

Mat 24:30 And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.

Mat 24:31 And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.

The Anointing Of God

You never know who God is going to anoint for a specific purpose. I mean look at David, the life of David and all that David encountered with Saul before David became King of Israel. Look at the life of Joseph, all that Joseph encountered, being thrown into the pit, sold into slavery, being beaten, imprisoned and so on. Then one day Joseph ended up in the Palace.

You never know who God is going to anoint for a specific purpose. One things is certain though. Those whom God anoints, no matter what demon from hell comes against them. God will complete the good work that he has begun, and His Word will not return unto Him void.

Stand, and stand....

You Ran The Race Set Before You

Who could have known that you would be setting in a school room filled with children when the towers were hit? God knew. Who would have known all that would unfold from that day forward in your administration? God did. Who would have known the situations, the circumstances, and even the decisions that you would have to make? God did.

Call To Prayer

For in one hour so great riches is come to nought. Revelation 18:17

Every time I ponder what this nation is facing financially I am reminded of this section and scripture in the book of revelations being from chapter 18. The reality is that a nations wealth can in one hour be brought to nothing.

Many times we believe that all is well. Then a hurricane comes and destroys life as many know it. Other times, life is quiet and peaceful, there's a earthquake and disaster rains. We have been seeing a huge increase in natural disasters around the world. The same could happen with the economic stability of any country. In one hour life could dramatically change as we know it.

May we all pray that God's mercy triumphs over judgement, that God would have mercy upon this nation and that His light would shine brightly in the hearts of mankind.

There is much talk about Mr. Obama and Mrs. Clinton. Who will become the next President? Will it be Mr. Obama, Mrs. Clinton, or Mr. Mc Cain? How will the next President affect the country, the nation, the people. What role will he or she play in world events?

Regardless, I'm placing my faith and trust in the King of the universe. Jesus. I'm placing my future in His hands. You see presidents will come and go, but Christ is eternal and offers eternal life.

Butter Me Up!

All Prophecy Is Given To Build Up, To Encourage, And To Comfort?

Many times there is a confusion that comes forth because many don't realize that there is a difference between the "office of a prophet" and "the gift of prophecy". One is exactly that being a office, with totally different functions, yet the same. The other is a gift of the spirit which Paul addressed in scripture.

The consensus is that all prophecy must be uplifting, encouraging, edifying, and bring comfort to the hearer. Unfortunately that leaves out many other truths according to the scriptures and closes not only the word of God off, but the power of prophecy in many areas and functions.

1Cr 14:3 But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort.

Lets examine the word exhort.

Exhort

http://cf.blueletterbible.org/lang/lexicon/lexicon.cfm?Strongs=G3874&Version=kjv

1) a calling near, summons, (esp. for help)
2) importation, supplication, entreaty
3) exhortation, admonition, encouragement
4) consolation, comfort, solace; that which affords comfort or refreshment
a) thus of the Messianic salvation (so the Rabbis call the Messiah the consoler, the comforter)
5) persuasive discourse, stirring address
6) instructive, admonitory, conciliatory, powerful hortatory discourse

Lets examine the root word

Root Word: http://cf.blueletterbible.org/lang/lexicon/Lexicon.cfm?Strongs=G3870&version=kjv

1) to call to one's side, call for, summon
2) to address, speak to, (call to, call upon), which may be done in the way of exhortation, entreaty, comfort, instruction, etc.
a) to admonish, exhort
b) to beg, entreat, beseech
1) to strive to appease by entreaty
c) to console, to encourage and strengthen by consolation, to comfort
1) to receive consolation, be comforted
d) to encourage, strengthen
e) exhorting and comforting and encouraging
f) to instruct, teach

Lets examine the dictionary

Exhort - http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/exhort

1.to urge, advise, or caution earnestly; admonish urgently.
–verb (used without object)
2.to give urgent advice, recommendations, or warnings.

The word Exhortation

Exhortation - http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/exhortation

1.the act or process of exhorting.

2.an utterance, discourse, or address conveying urgent advice or recommendations.

Now lets examine the word of God within the New Testament.

Act 5:1 But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession, Act 5:2 And kept back part of the price, his wife also being privy to it, and brought a certain part, and laid it at the apostles' feet. Act 5:3 But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land? Act 5:4 Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God. Act 5:5 And Ananias hearing these words fell down, and gave up the ghost: and great fear came on all them that heard these things. Act 5:6 And the young men arose, wound him up, and carried him out, and buried him.

Act 5:7 And it was about the space of three hours after, when his wife, not knowing what was done, came in. Act 5:8 And Peter answered unto her, Tell me whether ye sold the land for so much? And she said, Yea, for so much. Act 5:9 Then Peter said unto her, How is it that ye have agreed together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord? behold, the feet of them which have buried thy husband are at the door, and shall carry thee out. Act 5:10 Then fell she down straightway at his feet, and yielded up the ghost: and the young men came in, and found her dead, and, carrying her forth, buried her by her husband.

Now that was real encouraging, edifying, comforting and that which was spoken as a prophetic unction built up "Ananias and Sapphira" not to mentioned all the on lookers. Where is the grace, salvation, and the redemption of God in this word and what occurred? Couldn't a few bucks have been overlooked? OK, they lied not only to men, but the Holy Ghost.? Where was the blood of Christ, forgiveness, redemption?

Act 5:11 And great fear came upon all the church, and upon as many as heard these things.

Now what is this? Great fear came upon ALL the church as many HEARD (the prophecy, prophetic words) these things.

Since when is FEAR edifying and encouraging? Yet we are not given a spirit of fear, but of power, love and a sound mind? Interesting.

Lets examine just a few other scriptures out of hundreds that could be brought to light from the new testament.

Mar 3:28 Verily I say unto you, All sins shall be forgiven unto the sons of men, and blasphemies wherewith soever they shall blaspheme:

Now that is encouraging! It is also prophetic. Yet seconds later it reads.

Mar 3:29 But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost hath never forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal damnation: What?

This is also a prophetic word, and it is not encouraging at all. It is a warning. A very stern warning with major consequences. (Who was speaking here and who were the listeners?)

Lets examine another scripture.

Mat 5:22 But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: BUT whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.

Another prophetic word. Now that is very encouraging! Sounds like a warning to me. Sounds like a very stern warning that speaks of consequences. Bottom line “Don't Do It!” and if you have "repent quickly".

Here is a perfect example of what can happen when revelation come to a person from the Father.

Mat 16:16 And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. Mat 16:17 And Jesus answered and said unto him, BLESSED art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed [it] unto thee, but MY FATHER which is in heaven.

Wow! That is a awesome thing for one to hear the very Lord Jesus Christ say, blessed are you! Now that is encouraging, uplifting, comforting.

Minutes later

Mat 16;23 But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men.

"Awe! Those things that be of men".

What is this? Jesus just spoke a blessing over Peter saying thou art blessed, only to within minutes rebuke Peter, call Peter satan, and say thou art a offense to me. Not very encouraging, comforting, or edifying.

The word of God is full of prophecy, prophetic unctions. Some brings joy to the heart. Some are encouraging, some are edifying, lift you up, give you hope. And others are warnings to change course, to examine yourself, to examine your motives, and so on.

Most people fear, and become offended at the word repent, which simply means “hey I love you, change course, your going the wrong way”.

Sometimes prophecy is spoken in quietness, through edification, in encouragement and other times harshly, other times as a rebuke.

Sometimes it is shared through being herald through a writing being made plain on a tablet. Other times it is shared through a dream, a vision, through revelation and through prophetic unctions as simple as one single word. However there is even more....

That doesn’t mean that God stopped loving us or the person called to receive the word. Can you imagine the voice that Jesus used when he said "blessed are you" only to then rebuke Peter and call him satan and a offense minutes later. Picture that scene, and the emotion involved.

One of the most important words in my opinion in the word of God is the word 'if". If you do this, this will happen, if you do that, that will happen.

If you humble yourself God will exalt you, if you are prideful, God will resist you. If you wait on the Lord, the Lord will renew your strength, if you don’t, you will strive and your strength will not be renewed.

If you walk in the spirit, if you walk in the flesh and on and on it goes. These are all prophetic words with different outcomes. Blessings for obedience, curses for disobedience, prophetic words. If you hearken diligently unto the word (voice) of the Lord God all these blessings will come upon thee and overtake thee, if you don’t they will not and other things will come upon you.

Now as I said, the above is just a few examples out of hundreds and hundreds of scriptures.

Here are some other scriptures on the word exhort:

Act 2:40 And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this untoward generation.

Act 27:22 And now I exhort you to be of good cheer: for there shall be no loss of [any man's] life among you, but of the ship.

2Cr 9:5 Therefore I thought it necessary to exhort the brethren, that they would go before unto you, and make up beforehand your bounty, whereof ye had notice before, that the same might be ready, as a matter of bounty, and not as of covetousness.

1Th 4:1 Furthermore then we beseech you, brethren, and exhort you by the Lord Jesus, that as ye have received of us how ye ought to walk and to please God, so ye would abound more and more.

1Th 5:14 Now we exhort you, brethren, warn them that are unruly, comfort the feeble minded, support the weak, be patient toward all men.

2Th 3:12 Now them that are such we command and exhort by our Lord Jesus Christ, that with quietness they work, and eat their own bread.

1Ti 2:1 I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men;

1Ti 6:2 And they that have believing masters, let them not despise [them], because they are brethren; but rather do [them] service, because they are faithful and beloved, partakers of the benefit. These things teach and exhort.

2Ti 4:2 Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all long suffering and doctrine.

Tts 1:9 Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers.

Tts 2:6 Young men likewise exhort to be sober minded.

Tts 2:9 [Exhort] servants to be obedient unto their own masters, [and] to please [them] well in all [things]; not answering again;

Tts 2:15 These things speak, and exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no man despise thee.

Hbr 3:13 But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.

1Pe 5:1 The elders which are among you I exhort, who am also an elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed:

Jud 1:3 Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort [you] that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.

Here is further wisdom:

Exhort, Exhortation:

primarily, "to call to a person" (para, "to the side," kaleo, "to call"), denotes
(a) "to call on, entreat;"

(b) "to admonish, exhort, to urge" one to pursue some course of conduct (always prospective, looking to the future, in contrast to the meaning to comfort, which is retrospective, having to do with trial experienced), translated "exhort" in the RV of Phl 4:2; 1Th 4:10; Hbr 13:19,22, for AV, "beseech;" in 1Ti 5:1, for AV, "intreat;" in 1Th 5:11, for AV, "comfort;" "exhorted" in 2Cr 8:6; 12:18, for AV, "desired;" in 1Ti 1:3, for AV, "besought."

The Wilderness Destroys Codependence

The Lord said in Jeremiah 17:5,6 that He uses the desert to deal with codependence, people-pleasing, and fear of man. Of all ministries, the prophetic is probably most easily polluted by codependence. Stories litter the Old Testament of false prophets telling people what they wanted to hear simply to gain their approval. They muddied the oracle of the Lord, prophesying from their imaginations and emotions.

Many, if not most, of our desert experiences pertain to people--their rejection, persecution, gossip, misunderstanding, non-spiritualness, indifference, mockery. God thrust us into this desert because we care too much! Oh how quickly our heat would turn to cool waters if we would only become de-peopled! We all have a human need to be loved and affimed by others. This is not wrong. This basic need morphs into a sinful obsession when our emotional wellness is tied to people and their reactions more than to God. A prophesier must be so de-peopled that he senses a free-flowing confidence to be, say, and do whatever he needs. God will loose the desert dogs on us until we simply do not care anymore.

Leadership, Possession, Ministry

Junior's Strategy
JDM's strategy to fulfill its vision is three-fold:

(1) Leadership JDM strategizes to fulfill its vision by developing and installing capable spiritual leaders in the church; America first, then the nations. This will be accomplished primarily through the establishment of a revolving leadership training center. Trainees will be developed and equipped over a set time period, then resourced and commissioned.

(2) Possession of high places JDM strategizes to fulfill its vision by equipping ordinary Christians to possess the high places of leadership and authority within their vocational field. This mobilization and ascension of Christian commoners in society will result in the possession of cities, regions, and nations. The equipping will be accomplished through the leadership training center, itinerant ministry projects, and various communication outlets.

(3) Various ministry activities JDM strategizes to fulfill its vision through a wide variety of ministry activities: itinerant ministry, retreats/conferences, literature publications, email/internet, short-term missions, audio and video recordings, and any and every other endeavor faciliatory to JDM's vision.

In his own words:
"Everything starts at the top, the head. Over and over Scripture hails the sheer power of leadership. Therefore, my scheme to realize God's global glory through an Isaiah 2:2-church is to aim for the top. I'm impassioned to develop and set capable Christian leaders that will run with this vision. Since this requires more than just church leaders, I'm just as impassioned to equip ordinary lay Christians to excel in their vocational field so that they assume the highest leadership positions within that field. With capable spiritual leaders in the church, and godly Christians in the driver seat of every societal sector, we will see an Isaiah 2:2-church and God's global glory!"

Freedom From Fear

I know what it is like to be burdened, worried, concerned, experience fear, feelings of hopelessness, and to be simply overwhelmed. Fear, worry and concern can be normal. However fear can also be crippling. For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of love, power and a sound mind. Fear brings bondage, and oppression. Christ brings freedom.

For those of you that are experiencing this, I prophecy freedom over your life in the precious and mighty name of Jesus. I prophecy freedom from fear, the spirit of fear, and the bondages that it brings, in the Glorious name of Christ.

Here Comes Resurrection Celebration

Many call it Easter, and that's fine. I'm not into the Easter bunny, baskets, and colored eggs. Guess I grew out of that one. It is a beautiful holiday, a time for family gatherings, children playing and all the wonders and joy that surround the holiday and the coming of spring.

However it is truly a celebration about one of the greatest events in human history. You see it is all about the Resurrected Christ. For on the third day Jesus rose from the grave. God's only begotten Son who was sent of the Father and died on the cross for the sins of the world, rose from the grave as the Resurrected Christ, and through faith in Him, we have the promise of eternal life. Now that is worth celebrating.

May your celebration be filled with the love of the Father, the love of Christ, and the joy of the Lord.

Thus Saith The Lord

I just had to throw that in. But actually, it is a thus saith the Lord within the scriptures. Jesus said, as John records.

Jhn 21:15 So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, [son] of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs.

Jhn 21:16 He saith to him again the second time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my sheep.

Jhn 21:17 He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep.

How much do we love you Jesus.

Spirit Of Prophecy

A scripture to ponder.

Rev 19:10 And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me, See thou do it not: I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.

For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.

The Way Out Of The Pit

From the bottom of the pit, to the top of the pit, is the way of love, filled with the fullness of the measure of Christ.

On Saturday morning, my wife shared a dream that she had with me. The first two parts of the dream were of a personal nature, however the third and concluding part of the dream, was a beautiful picture of one of the most powerful gifts in God's Kingdom.

The dream was as follows: My wife dreamt that our pastor (symbolic) said that the Lord some years ago said to him; "from the bottom of the pit, to the top of the pit, is the way of love, which accompanied a song". Then my wife shared that the Lord spoke to her and said "why don't you spend a week with me?".

Wow, that is a awesome invitation, and even the symbolic meaning of a week, being seven days, is profound within scripture.

As I pondered this dream. I thought of the many ways that we as human beings, as even believers we can dig pits. Some that are shallow and some that are deep. Sometimes we dig them one shovel at a time and over the seasons they get deeper and deeper. Sometimes we jump face first into them, sometimes we fall into them and other times we keep re visiting them. Sometimes they are easy to climb out of and other times they become so deep, that we can bearly see the light at the top, as darkness surrounds us.

Through sins, walking in darkness, getting off course, being on that freeway called life and getting off at all the wrong exits, making the wrong decisions, bitterness, strife, contention, angers, un forgiveness, holding childhood grudges, that I forgive you, but! attitude, constant complaining, lack of knowledge and many other characteristic traits, we can dig deep pits that bring great sorrows and un happiness to us and those around us.

Other times our pits are dug through intense hatred, rebellion, and disobedience to God over a life time, as we have become so bitter that we become self destructive, prideful, through a hardened and rebellious heart.

Other times from past relationship issues, past marriages, and as the years and season pass, we can find life so miserable, that peace and joy seems far from us, that blessings seem to have escaped us, as we fall deeper and deeper into the pit of un forgiveness of wrongs and wounds. It doesn't matter how shallow or how deep the pit has become. It is a place of darkness, like a personal prison.

I performed a bible study on the word pit, and found the following: a hole in the ground (Exd 21:33,34), a cistern for water (Gen 37:24; Jer 14:3), a vault (41:9), a grave (Psa 30:3). It is used as a figure for mischief (Psa 9:15), and is the name given to the unseen place of woe (Rev 20:1,3). The slime-pits in the vale of Siddim were wells which yielded asphalt (Gen 14:10).

So what could a pit be symbolic of in the above. Can we view the hole in the ground, as even symbolic of being a hole in one's heart filled with offenses, a place of mischef, of woe, of bitterness and of unforgiveness. A place where a religious and critical spirit resides. Could the hole be even a place deep in our soul where un forgiveness, bitterness, a critical and judge mental spirit resides?

From the bottom of the pit, to the top of the pit, is the way of love. Love being the greatest of all gifts, love that covers a multitude of sins, love that is kind, compassionate, considerate of others, longsuffering and full of forgiveness.

Here is a powerful prayer.

That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man; That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, May be able to comprehend with all saints what [is] the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.

For love is the greatest of all gifts, and a gift of God:

Love worketh no ill to his neighbor: therefore love [is] the fulfilling of the law. And that, knowing the time, that now [it is] high time to awake out of sleep: for now [is] our salvation nearer than when we believed. The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the Armour of light. Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying. But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to [fulfil] the lusts [thereof]....

Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become [as] sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal. And though I have [the gift of] prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.

And though I bestow all my goods to feed [the poor], and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing. Charity suffereth long, [and] is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil;Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things. Charity never faileth: but whether [there be] prophecies, they shall fail; whether [there be] tongues, they shall cease; whether [there be] knowledge, it shall vanish away. For we know in part, and we prophesy in part. But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away..

When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things. For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known. And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these [is] charity......

Finally, brethren, farewell. Be perfect, be of good comfort, be of one mind, live in peace; and the God of love and peace shall be with you. Greet one another with an holy kiss. All the saints salute you. The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost, [be] with you all. Amen.

Yes, truly love is the greatest of all gifts...

Elijah The Prophet

Mal 4:1 For, behold, the day cometh, that shall burn as an oven; and all the proud, yea, and all that do wickedly, shall be stubble: and the day that cometh shall burn them up, saith the LORD of hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch.

Mal 4:2 But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings; and ye shall go forth, and grow up as calves of the stall.

Mal 4:3 And ye shall tread down the wicked; for they shall be ashes under the soles of your feet in the day that I shall do this, saith the LORD of hosts.

Mal 4:4 Remember ye the law of Moses my servant, which I commanded unto him in Horeb for all Israel, with the statutes and judgments.

Mal 4:5 Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD:

Mal 4:6 And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse.

Fatherless And Widows

Jam 1:27 Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, [and] to keep himself unspotted from the world.

About Apostles

Apostle: A person sent by another; a messenger; envoy.

This word is once used as a descriptive designation of Jesus Christ, the Sent of the Father (Hbr 3:1; Jhn 20:21). It is, however, generally used as designating the body of disciples to whom he intrusted the organization of his church and the dissemination of his gospel, "the twelve," as they are called (Mat 10:1-5; Mar 3:14; 6:7; Luk 6:13; 9:1). We have four lists of the apostles, one by each of the synoptic evangelists (Mat 10:2-4; Mar 3:16; Luk 6:14), and one in the Acts (Act 1:13). No two of these lists, however, perfectly coincide.

Our Lord gave them the "keys of the kingdom," and by the gift of his Spirit fitted them to be the founders and governors of his church (Jhn 14:16,17,26; 15:26,27; 16:7-15). To them, as representing his church, he gave the commission to "preach the gospel to every creature" (Mat 28:18-20). After his ascension he communicated to them, according to his promise, supernatural gifts to qualify them for the discharge of their duties (Act 2:4; 1Cr 2:16; 2:7,10,13; 2Cr 5:20; 1Cr 11:2). Judas Iscariot, one of "the twelve," fell by transgression, and Matthias was substituted in his place (Act 1:21). Saul of Tarsus was afterwards added to their number (Act 9:3-20; 20:4; 26:15-18; 1Ti 1:12; 2:7; 2Ti 1:11).

Luke has given some account of Peter, John, and the two Jameses (Act 12:2,17; 15:13; 21:18), but beyond this we know nothing from authentic history of the rest of the original twelve. After the martyrdom of James the Greater (Act 12:2), James the Less usually resided at Jerusalem, while Paul, "the apostle of the uncircumcision," usually travelled as a missionary among the Gentiles (Gal 2:8). It was characteristic of the apostles and necessary

(1) that they should have seen the Lord, and been able to testify of him and of his resurrection from personal knowledge (Jhn 15:27; Act 1:21,22; 1Cr 9:1; Act 22:14,15).

(2.) They must have been immediately called to that office by Christ (Luk 6:13; Gal 1:1).

(3.) It was essential that they should be infallibly inspired, and thus secured against all error and mistake in their public teaching, whether by word or by writing (Jhn 14:26; 16:13; 1Th 2:13).

(4.) Another qualification was the power of working miracles (Mar 16:20; Act 2:43; 1Cr 12:8-11). The apostles therefore could have had no successors. They are the only authoritative teachers of the Christian doctrines. The office of an apostle ceased with its first holders.
In 2Cr 8:23 and Phl 2:25 the word "messenger" is the rendering of the same Greek word, elsewhere rendered "apostle."
